When Will I Hear from Plan II? What's happening?

Plan II has finalized reviews on 35% of the applications we have received to date (12/6/10). We have mailed two groups of offers of admission (115 offers). About 2/3 of the Plan II Honors offers of admission remain to be made.

Every applicant who completes all the UT and Plan II application requirements (on-time!) receives a thorough review and full consideration for Plan II Honors Program admission.

However, Plan II Honors reviews applications in the order in which they become complete. If your application documents were not completed until the final week before the deadline, your application will be among those we review much later in this admission cycle. It’s likely to be February before we review your application and notify you of the Plan II admission decision if you did not have every document submitted before November 22, 2010.

If you submitted any application documents on or after November 28, and they do not yet reflect on the Status Check, you have to be patient. Those documents may not show up on Status Check for another week, perhaps a day or two more.

Because so many applicants wait until the last week to apply, UT Admissions receives about 20,000—25,000 PAPER DOCUMENTS (transcripts, letters of recommendation, supporting documents and even résumés and essays which can easily be submitted electronically) from the applicants who apply in the final week before the deadline. UT received more than 15,000 applications after Thanksgiving and about 75-80% of those had at least one paper document.

Every paper document must be logged in, assigned a unique identification number and then be digitally imaged. In the case of transcripts, the staff at UT Admissions must manually enter the senor year course schedule units and check for the State’s minimum and the UT minimum high school requirements. It’s a tedious process that is complicated by shear numbers.

As far as admission offers at this point in the process, early on we skim off the very top of our applicants and offer admission to a small number until we get through most of the applications (which will be mid-February at the earliest). Those who are not scored in the top ranks won’t here from us until February. It COULD conceivably still be good news: There are some who are right on the cusp, but we will wait until we’ve seen most of the applicant pool before we make a Plan II offer of admission. And, there will be some very strong applicants, who submitted after November 20 (or so) that we won't even review for the first review until mid-, even late-February.

'Tis the Season....

We are burrowing through piles of applications as fast as we can.

Folks who applied by November 1 should know that their application will be reviewed before other applicants', but an early review doesn't guarantee early notification. We do want to notify applicants of their Plan II admission status as soon as possible however. We don't like keeping people waiting any more than you want to wait. :-)

The good news/bad news is that we are seeing a lot of really wonderful applications. Of course, we are thrilled to see them and humbled that so many talented, bright and exciting individuals chose to apply to Plan II. The bad news is that it makes our jobs harder since we simply cannot admit all the great applicants.

We will send at least one more bunch of admission offers before the UT Winter Break and will keep reviewing files and notifying applicant throughout January and February.

Best of luck to all.

Notification and Timing

Early submission of application documents does not necessarily guarantee an early response. Plan II will review applications, in the order that the applications are completed. However some applications will be "held" until the full applicant pool is under review.

All Plan II Honors applicants will receive notification in writing, via the US mail, regardless of the admission decision. We will not discuss admission decisions on the phone, except in cases where the applicant is out of the country and the timing of mail delivery is unpredictable.

We expect to notify all applicants by February 20, 2011, but many applicants will hear much early. In any case, all Plan II admission decisions will be complete by March 15, 2011.

Current Students as an Admissions Resource

Plan II has many student volunteers who are happy to share their personal impressions of Plan II, their decision process when they chose Plan II over other schools, their classroom and dorm experiences, their “extra-curricular” experiences, etc. These email ambassadors are an important information resource for prospective applicants.

At Contact a Plan II Student, you will find a long list of students willing to answer questions about their experiences at UT, in Plan II, in the dorms, in Plan II Honors and UT Austin student organizations, etc. Each student’s double-major and/or dual-degree information (including pre-med and pre-law) is noted. Feel free to contact as many email ambassadors as you wish. Ask them questions about their experience, such as:

What do you like, or not like
* about Plan II?
* about UT?
* about the students, the faculty, the dorms, the campus, or about Austin?
* about combining this or that major and/or degree?
* How did you manage your time?
* Were you still able to include outside activities?
etc., etc., etc....

Please note: We discourage these students from giving any kind of formal/direct “advising,” because we want to be sure every Plan II student and applicant gets answers from our trained, professional admissions and advising staff.

For instructions on how to apply to Plan II, please browse through our Admission pages, which direct you to official application information. Questions about the application or about the Plan II Honors program or curriculum? Contact: Admissions

Good news. The UT Office of Admissions has upgraded the on-line résumé submission process. Now, when you submit your résumé electronically, it is saved as a PDF document. Your formatting is preserved.

This system is faster. Your document will be acknowledged on your Status Check site immediately. It's safer. You résumé will be protected by your UT EID and password so it's secure. There are no length limits.

No more faxing or mailing. This is absolutely the best way to go!

Be sure to read the information on BeALonghorn at Résumé.

Important Essay Tips...Do Yourself a Favor

Take your time but beware over-editing.

Spend plenty of time writing and fine-tuning your essays. Ask for feedback from people you trust before submitting your essays. But be careful. Don't allow helpful editors to edit you out of your own essay.

Although you want to write with care, you should not spend weeks or months rewriting essays. There is little to gain after the third draft.

Express yourself:
Appeal to the senses when you write: show us what is beautiful, sad, impressive, scary, confusing, frustrating or comforting. Don't just tell us that it was so. To make your story resonate employ detail, description and precision rather than pretension and melodrama. Don't simply tell us what you think or what you feel in abstract terms. Describe it. Make it real.

Size matters:
Although the University's BeALonghorn essay information suggests an essay should be no longer than one page (single-spaced) we find that essays shorter than one full page are skimpy by Plan II Honors' standards. It's quite rare to see top-notch essay written with fewer than 250 words. That doesn't mean that longer is better or that we will reward you for "filler." Write to the point! In most cases, the most successful Plan II application essays are in the 500-600 word range.

Accessing the Honors Application

Keep in mind that the required on-line Honors Application will not be available until 24 to 48 hours AFTER the applicant has submitted ApplyTexas and that application has uploaded into the system.

The Honors Application is an electronic application that's separate from ApplyTexas. AFTER ApplyTexas has loaded, the applicant can access the on-line honors application.

Once ApplyTexas has up-loaded, the applicant will receive an email (and hard-copy letter, eventually) saying "thanks for applying to UT." That email tells you that ApplyTexas has loaded and the honors application is accessible. The on-line honors application is found at the link in the email or through BeALonghorn Honors pages.

One more reason to complete the application as early as possible! After November 1, it will take longer than 24 hours for your application to upload into the system (perhaps two or three days), and therefore it will take longer for you to have access to the honors application to complete your Plan II application requirements.

Please be sure to refer to the application instructions and admission information on the Plan II website. These two web pages clarify these points and many other important details. A smart applicant will read all the information under the Admission heading on the main menu of the Plan II web site.

The 2011 Application Cycle

We're already into our second week of fall classes at Plan II Honors! It's so exciting to see the campus wake up again after a long hot summer. It's still very hot--but not too hot for students to have a lot of fun on campus. Gone to Texas, UT Austin's official welcome back to all UT students was last Tuesday night, before fall classes began on Wed, August 25.

We have lots of great stuff to look forward to this academic year: our Plan II Convocation for our first-year students is on September 2; the Freshman Getaway is on Friday, September 10, the Sophomore Summit is also in September and Plan II Family Day is set for October 17. We also have a myriad of guest speakers, films and other events scheduled throughout the year. The icing on this year's Plan II cake will be the 75th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary celebration (of the creation of Plan II Honors in 1935) coming up in March, 2011. Life is always busy and exciting in Plan II.

I'm looking forward to the start of this semester's information sessions on September 8. In addition to learning tons of information about Plan II, applicants (and parents/family members) have a chance to ask all their questions. Best of all, the applicants get to attend a Plan II class and meet some Plan II students and at least one professor. Sign up as soon as you can for a session. Some dates fill quickly and space is limited. See Visit Plan II. I look forward to meeting many of you blog followers throughout the fall and spring.

Applications have already begun to trickle in electronically. Although Plan II will not receive electronic applications for review from UT Admissions until mid-September, I can see the complete applications in the system now. Some applicants, to whom Plan II will offer admission, will hear from us as early as October.

There's no panic to submit an application this early. But it's very important to keep an eye on that priority deadline of November 1. If you aim to have your application complete by November 1, you're in good shape. Remember, procrastination can hurt your chances of admission if you're applying to Plan II Honors. We review applications in the order in which they are completed and we conduct rolling admissions. Fewer spaces will be available to those who apply later in the application cycle. So don't wait to complete your application, when there are fewer spaces available, thereby putting yourself in a more competitive applicant pool.

We invite Fall 2011 applicants to Visit Plan II Honors

Our Plan II Honors information session agenda includes a one-hour session with prospective students and their family members, followed by a visit to a Plan II Honors World Literature class for the student, while parents remain for more information and Q&A. The session topics include:

* What is Plan II?
* Critical Deadlines and How to Apply
* Evaluation Criteria
* Core Curriculum
* Honors and General Housing Information
* Study Abroad
* Test Credits (AP, SAT II, IB)
* Double-Majors & Dual-Degrees
* Misconceptions
* What do you with a Plan II major?
* Class Visit for prospective student
* Continuation of Info session for parents while the prospective student visits a
Plan II World Literature class.

Registration is required to attend the Plan II information session. At Visit Plan II you’ll find links to register for a information session and class visit, maps to our building and a map to Hargis Hall, where the general UT information session will be held, as well as links to maps of parking and to other areas of campus.

Visit Plan II also contains a link to the PDF download of the self-guided campus walking tour and information on other college and academic program information sessions. Some folks use the self-guided tour to check out the campus early in the morning, before the Plan II session, leaving an extra free hour in the afternoon to squeeze in a second college or major information session, a dorm tour or a visit to one of the campus jewels, such as the Blanton Art Museum, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center or the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum.

Visitors can tour one of three different dorms: Kinsolving, San Jacinto, or Jester. The honors residence halls are not available for tours. Many folks also try to squeeze in a stop at the Housing Office (DHFS), Freshman Admissions Office, or the Office of Student Financial Services (OSFS) before or after all those events.

*Interviews are not required as part of the admissions process.

Plan II does not offer information sessions over the summer or during spring break.

Fall 2011 Applicants: Keep an eye on the Calendar!

The final deadline for application to UT Austin and to Plan II Honors for fall 2011 freshman admission is December 1, 2010, with no exceptions.

Plan II Honors recommends that all applicants apply well before DECEMBER 1, 2010. If there are problems with your application we have time to help you complete your application before the deadline.

Applying late in the application cycle (after November 15) is quite likely to adversely affect an applicant’s likelihood of admission. Plan II reviews application in the order the applications are completed and conducts “rolling” admissions. We will begin offering admission for the fall 2011 as early as the end of October, 2010. Therefore, fewer spots are available as we move closer to the deadline. Obviously, competition will be stiffer as fewer spots are available.

However, rushing to complete an application in early August isn’t necessarily the wisest approach under any circumstances. A careful review and edit of your application materials, particularly the essays and the expanded résumé, is far, far more important than getting the application completed and submitted in August or September. There is very little difference in submitting your application by August 15 and submitting your application by October 15. An application with strong essays and a more detailed résumé submitted on November 3 is more likely to earn an admission offer than an application submitted on September 1 with uninteresting, superficial essays.

It’s only when an applicant waits until after November 1—and especially if an applicant waits to submit until after November 15—that the timing of the submission becomes a real issue in admissibility.

Plan II will not review ANY applications until at least the end of September. So there is no reason to feel compelled to submit an application before September 15, 2010.

Making your Decision

I know that many of you are facing difficult decisions since you now must choose between offers from several wonderful schools. How do you choose?

Below I've noted a few links to some information that might be helpful. Remember that whatever school you choose, your experience is made up of much more than your schedule of classes each semester. You want to have a selection of interesting and useful classes, but the students in those classes and the activities swirling around you will often have more impact on you and your college experience as a whole than one single class.

If you want to visit, now's the time! Register for the Plan II information session, see the dates of information sessions/class visits, find maps, and more at VISIT Plan II.

If you can't visit, you can download the 16-page Plan II booklet that we use at the information session. It includes information on the core curriculum, test credits, study abroad, student organizations, and much more!

Contact a Plan II student: You will find a long list of students willing to answer questions about their experiences at UT, in Plan II, in the dorms, in Plan II Honors and UT Austin student organizations, etc. Each student’s double-major and/or dual-degree information (including pre-med and pre-law) is noted. Feel free to contact as many email ambassadors as you wish. Ask them questions about their experience, such as:

What do you like, (or not like)
* about Plan II?
* about UT?
* about the students, the faculty, the campus, or about living in Austin?
* about combining with another major?
* How did you manage your time?
* What activities are in you outside of the class room?
* What do you think of your classes outside of Plan II?
etc., etc. etc....d

Please note: We discourage students from giving any formal/direct “advising,” because we want to be sure every Plan II student gets solid information from our trained, professional admissions and advising staff. They are welcome to share their personal experiences!

Finalizing Admissions

Better late than never.....

Here's where we are, just before Spring Break:

All Plan II admission notifications were mailed last week. If you haven't received your decision from Plan II Honors, please contact me directly via email.

For those offered admission:
If you haven't visited a Plan II information session and class, we hope you will. Lots of information is available on the visit Plan II Honors link. You can register for an information session and see maps, hotel information, etc.

We will not offer information sessions during Spring Break or on Friday, March 26 however. We want you to visit when students and faculty are around and classes are in session. There is no point visiting campus simply to see a bunch of empty buildings. Friday, March 26 is an invitation only scholarship day. We will not hold an information session or offer class visits.

Contact a Plan II Student....really! These current students have offered to serve as email ambassadors. You are welcome to ask them questions concerning dorms, student life, balancing double-majors and dual-degrees, etc. They can really be a great source of information.

Other helpful sources of information on the website can be found at Why Choose Plan II.

If you choose Plan II, remember to send in your Plan II Admission Response form (from the back of the booklet included with your admission offer letter). An addressed, paid envelope was included with your admission offer. Send us your photo for the Plan II Freshman Facebook and, as soon as you have registered for orientation, send us your orientation session dates. When I receive your response form, I'll send a great deal more information.

Remember you are always welcome to contact me with questions or concerns.

For those offered the wait list option: Please remember that you must respond to be officially placed on the wait list. If we do not hear from you, you will not be reconsidered for Plan II Honors admission in May. The Plan II Wait List Option.

For those denied Plan II admission but admitted to UT Austin: There is an appeal process. Please understand right up front that, even if an appeal does result in your name getting moved from denied to the wait list, that those folks originally offered the wait list option will be considered before those who were denied and moved to the wait list by way of an appeal.
