We're already into our second week of fall classes at Plan II Honors! It's so exciting to see the campus wake up again after a long hot summer. It's still very hot--but not too hot for students to have a lot of fun on campus. Gone to Texas, UT Austin's official welcome back to all UT students was last Tuesday night, before fall classes began on Wed, August 25.
We have lots of great stuff to look forward to this academic year: our Plan II Convocation for our first-year students is on September 2; the Freshman Getaway is on Friday, September 10, the Sophomore Summit is also in September and Plan II Family Day is set for October 17. We also have a myriad of guest speakers, films and other events scheduled throughout the year. The icing on this year's Plan II cake will be the 75th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary celebration (of the creation of Plan II Honors in 1935) coming up in March, 2011. Life is always busy and exciting in Plan II.
I'm looking forward to the start of this semester's information sessions on September 8. In addition to learning tons of information about Plan II, applicants (and parents/family members) have a chance to ask all their questions. Best of all, the applicants get to attend a Plan II class and meet some Plan II students and at least one professor. Sign up as soon as you can for a session. Some dates fill quickly and space is limited. See Visit Plan II. I look forward to meeting many of you blog followers throughout the fall and spring.
Applications have already begun to trickle in electronically. Although Plan II will not receive electronic applications for review from UT Admissions until mid-September, I can see the complete applications in the system now. Some applicants, to whom Plan II will offer admission, will hear from us as early as October.
There's no panic to submit an application this early. But it's very important to keep an eye on that priority deadline of November 1. If you aim to have your application complete by November 1, you're in good shape. Remember, procrastination can hurt your chances of admission if you're applying to Plan II Honors. We review applications in the order in which they are completed and we conduct rolling admissions. Fewer spaces will be available to those who apply later in the application cycle. So don't wait to complete your application, when there are fewer spaces available, thereby putting yourself in a more competitive applicant pool.

Plan II is education without boundaries. It is a four-year degree that leads from a broad core curriculum in the early years to a student's own choice of coursework in the later ones. Small classes and a common curriculum develop a sense of intimate community, while the size of The University provides an enormous range of freedom to pursue a variety of interests, and the student services and organizations, the library facilities and a computing infrastructure to do it quite well.

Visit Plan II also contains a link to the PDF download of the self-guided campus walking tour and information on other college and academic program information sessions. Some folks use the self-guided tour to check out the campus early in the morning, before the Plan II session, leaving an extra free hour in the afternoon to squeeze in a second college or major information session, a dorm tour or a visit to one of the campus jewels, such as the Blanton Art Museum, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center or the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum.
Visitors can tour one of three different dorms: Kinsolving, San Jacinto, or Jester. The honors residence halls are not available for tours. Many folks also try to squeeze in a stop at the Housing Office (DHFS), Freshman Admissions Office, or the Office of Student Financial Services (OSFS) before or after all those events.
*Interviews are not required as part of the admissions process.
Plan II does not offer information sessions over the summer or during spring break.

Fall 2011 Applicants: Keep an eye on the Calendar!
The final deadline for application to UT Austin and to Plan II Honors for fall 2011 freshman admission is December 1, 2010, with no exceptions.
Plan II Honors recommends that all applicants apply well before DECEMBER 1, 2010. If there are problems with your application we have time to help you complete your application before the deadline.
Applying late in the application cycle (after November 15) is quite likely to adversely affect an applicant’s likelihood of admission. Plan II reviews application in the order the applications are completed and conducts “rolling” admissions. We will begin offering admission for the fall 2011 as early as the end of October, 2010. Therefore, fewer spots are available as we move closer to the deadline. Obviously, competition will be stiffer as fewer spots are available.
However, rushing to complete an application in early August isn’t necessarily the wisest approach under any circumstances. A careful review and edit of your application materials, particularly the essays and the expanded résumé, is far, far more important than getting the application completed and submitted in August or September. There is very little difference in submitting your application by August 15 and submitting your application by October 15. An application with strong essays and a more detailed résumé submitted on November 3 is more likely to earn an admission offer than an application submitted on September 1 with uninteresting, superficial essays.
It’s only when an applicant waits until after November 1—and especially if an applicant waits to submit until after November 15—that the timing of the submission becomes a real issue in admissibility.
Plan II will not review ANY applications until at least the end of September. So there is no reason to feel compelled to submit an application before September 15, 2010.
